Can we edit or retract entries we have already made?

Yes! So long as it has not been 'edited' and gone through the peer review process for frontpage publication you can still change or delete any guide entry you have written.
Rather than me explain it and confuse you this page explains how to do it

No peer review. I just want to soften some comments I made in another posting.

Unfortunatley posts can't be edited. Unless they break the <./>houserules</.> in which case you can yikes it, even your own, but they won't remove something otherwise.
The only thing I can suggest is post again with an apology and say that having read what you wrote, you want to rephrase it

That’s actually what I have already done. Even though this is a little distressing. Going through this process is good for me. It will help me temper my responses. I really don't think anyones feathers are going to be too ruffled. Or as we are almost always able to say in most none surgical settings.. well no one died on my operating table today.
Thanks
Tom

Believe me, even the best of us have had to yikes our own posts when we have posted out of anger, irritation etc.
The good thing is being able to recognise it and do something about it
So don't worry about it too much
