Couldn't you stride round the place looking very efficient and important and busy - then sneak up to the air conditioned offices?
It's kill two birds with one stone so to speak and also get you out of reception for a bit.

There's a woman who works in the room next door to me who absolutely refuses to cover reception...so I have to get my boss to do it instead...snot really fair on him is it
