John Sergeant was brilliant as the host tonight - please ask him to do it every week, otherwise this may be the end of one of the best shows on television.

Yeah, I have to admit, it could have been much worse. It still doesn't have that Angus sparkle, but it's the best we have so far. I'm not sure Boris Johnson will do so well-I think he's not quite sharp enough. Although he may prove me wrong.

John Sergeant is brilliant as a guest but has something missing as a host. If Angus is not to be allowed back, I would suggest that Humphrey Lyttleton would make an excellent job of chairing the show.

Please keep Boris Johnson! Tonight I exceeded my quota of 4 belly laughs. I know he's busy, but maybe you could tell him he's helping the cause or something.
Angus' self-assured stiffness was great for a witty straight-man, but Boris kept the jokes going around with a combination of bumbling, self-defence, even satire on his own politics. With Clive Anderson chipping in the whole act was remarkable.
Do it again!

Following the departure of Angus Deayton, tonight's episode was the funniest yet. Boris Johnson was not the best host ever - is the man real? How on earth did he get to edit the Spectator and become a member of parliament?
Although better as a guest, I think dear old Boris would make the best presenter of the lot we have seen so far. There's only so much you can tease him about. After that, his bumbling ways alone would suffice to keep the action going, believe it or not.
John Sergeant was not quick enough and Anne Robinson's awarding of discretionary points simply ruined the game. (And by the way, don't you agree it's about time Hislop had a fair crack at the game.)
Ultimately, the game works best with an independent host. The best selection would be a journalist with a keen interest in satire and a good brain; someome who also keeps up with current affairs. Surely there are some out there? The show has included such people not normally seen on the box. How about another one to host the show?
In the meantime, they should try and stick with Boris. Hislop & Merton actually seemed to be enjoying themselves and in the swing of things tonight. I laughed and swore out loud again, after a lengthy time. The show needs to find its feet again, on a consistent basis.

Boris J as host? - surely not! But for heaven's sake give him another go, I've only just recovered from the pains of laughter. Great relief after AD, but why don't the Bb alternate them? And AR every now and again, just to appreciate the full scope of this show?

Have I Got News for You
Simply the best show ever.
Boris is brilliant.
Give that man a coconut. Better still, sign him up as permanent presenter.

Thin Lizzy Posted Nov 30, 2002
A coconut?? Wow! Who needs the George Cross?
What a shame I missed it. I'll have to try and see it tonight. I'd never have thought he'd be too good at it. But then, I was the one who thought Michael Palin should play Dumbledore in the next Harry Potter film!

I must say the episode with Borris Johnson as the host was the best episode I've seen, I've never laughed so much whilst watching the program as I did last night.
He HAS to stay as host!! It'd be a crime to let him go!

definitely the funniest show that i've seen in a long time.
this probably resulted from boris and his eccentricities becoming the butt of the teams' jokes but also Boris having to 'fit' into BBC popular entertainment
yet surely the reason it was funny and refreshingly appealing was that it felt so unrehearsed
i understand charles kennedy is scheduled to host next weeks episode and i eagerly await the result
may be the answer is to put high profile politicians into the hot seat as the show becomes more of a platform for crossfire between entertainment/politics/satire
the stark contrast between the team's attitude, the writers and researchers standpoint, and Boris' own world made the humour come alive
clive anderson was also an invaluable guest
moreover, i still feel that the decision to sack Angus was probably unjustified - isn't the satire of the show based on being able to make fun of members of the team - and so why not the host ?
yet in light of the Boris episode; a breath of fresh air - the show clearly has staled
is it possible to have Angus back as a permanent guest ?

We laughed so much last night that we had to watch the show again tonight. Borris is a surprising talent! He really brought the show to life again. Get him back!!

Yeah, I saw it. Well done, Boris! I loved his bumbling ways, and the way he so successfully kicked labour ass! I think the novelty maywear off if he always does it, but he's great every so often. I hope we see more of him.

I agree the Boris episode was AMAZING, I laughed uncontrollably both times I saw it. But I agree every once in a while definately, but every week would just spoil the effect. Perhaps regular presenter rotation (provided they can get the quality of presenters and Not Anne Robinson) would help keep the show out of a rut after 12 years it was inevitably going top fall into.

The satire of the show is being able to poke fun at the members of the team and so why not the host?
Well yes perhaps. But unfortunately the whole lot of them used the Deayton situation to boring effect. It simply wasn't funny. And the animosity (or perhaps jealousy of the situation where Deayton had more attention) so readily apparent in Hislop & Merton, led to many embarrassing moments of TV time.
The satire is best aimed at something or someone in the questions.
I even felt sorry for Christine Hamilton, who proved to be a real trooper and the "Battle Axe" she has labelled herself. She took a lot of unnecessary stick. If they thought so little of her why invite her on?
Keep the satire to the questions and topical news issues please.

Boris Johnson was fantastic. I haven't laughed at "Have I got news for you" for a long time, but Friday night had me belly laughing on numerous occasions.

I agree-The first time he was in the news, you could see that he just wanted to evaporate on the spot. It was painful just watching it.

Boris was hilarious - give him the job permanently.

R2D2 Posted Dec 11, 2002
And he excelled over Liza Tarbuck's great but far too stoic effort! It's about a balance of laughs vs discipline.
Anne Robinson gave out discretionary point as she felt fit. Yuck!
Boris tried to keep the game in line, whilst bumbling greatly.
Liza was a bit too school marmish! Very serious - indeed far too serious and not at all funny.
Boris is still my number one. (And I really never thought I'd say that.)

I reckon that an ideal setup for the future of the show would to be to alternate between Boris and John. They have been the best so far, and by alternating between the two, it would ensure that the show would not become stale.
An excellent one off presenter would be Steve Coogan in character as Alan Partridge. Absolutely hilarious.
