Thanks for that fascinating article.
As an American soldier, I spent a lot of time in Coburg in the 70s and 80s. It was considered to be one of the worst posts to pull border duty on. GIs stuck out like a sore thumb at the time, and so I wasn't able to appreciate the place.
Your article has made me want to go back there now!!!

GI's still stick out like a sore thumb, no change there. Mostly, they congregate around the McDonalds so as not to be shocked by the alien culture of it all...
