Appealing a moderation decision
Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Aug 7, 2005
I've yikesed a posting and received an e-mail from a moderator saying they do not agree with my complaint and are leaving the posting unchanged. I've replied to that e-mail further outlining the reasons for my complaint but haven't yet received a reply.
What happens now. Will my e-mail go back to the same moderator, will it go to a different moderator or will it be referred to one of the h2g2 Editors for a more detailed look?

It will be referred to the Editors for a decision. Also it is possible you are not the only researcher to yikes that particular posting, have you checked back to see if it is still there?

I figured it was that one you yikesed Gnomon. Jeez, it's like being in a school playground full of bloody ten-year olds

Mine too. I've been wandering through your two convo lists looking for likely candidates.

I'll take a flyer and assume that it is probably somewhere in Ask.

I also thought it was in very bad taste. I wonder if the moderator understood the context?

Probably not. I see that the original posting has now been hidden, and the perpetrator of this outrage has apologised. So I have removed Serephina from my blacklist, and have temporarily cancelled my plans for an extended lunchbreak.

If you reply to the email you received from the Moderators, that will then be reviewed. The problem is that as it doesn't go back to the Moderators on duty, your complaint will only be reviewed during office hours.
It would appear a number of people complained about the same thread, and there were a few crossovers here. Thanks to everyone who alerted us to this.

Appealing a moderation decision

Well Jimster, I got hauled over the coals just recently and was informed that I could not post a message because it had three German words in it.
Today I was browsing and guess what I found on this page>>>>
Farting Etiquette
In the middle ages, loudly breaking wind was an act of appreciation to the housewife: Martin Luther is quoted as supposedly having said Warum rülpset und furzet ihr nicht, hat es euch denn nicht geschmecket? ('Why don't you belch and fart, did you not enjoy the meal?'1). This rule of behaviour has now been abandoned and gas should be released only after having stepped outside. Persistent failure to abide by this rule may lead to social isolation.

Did you provide a translation of the three German words in your posting, Tom?

We don't discuss individual moderation decisions onsite, although I believe you've been emailed an answer to one query from h2g2 Feedback.
The entry you quote would be this one: A673508. This is an Edited Entry, and we do try to check that the foreign language content in Edited Entries is correct. The non-English ruling for moderation is intended as a deterent as we simply don't have the resources to check postings in every language. The in-house team members are able to check basic French and Spanish, which is why occasionally we can allow content through so long as we're certain it's not offensive, but as a rule we can't pass everything if only because it sets up a precedent: 'You allowed French so why not German... you allowed Welsh so why not Cornish...'
This is a topic that does come around again and again with the central Moderation Group so it might well be up for review again soon. But for the moment that's the policy we have to adhere to.
Key: Complain about this post
