If as a none subscriber you stumble into the h2g2 Front Page (Welcome) via BBC>Talk, the intro. to the Edited Guide, the heart of h2g2, creates confusion.

The menu option is not available unless you have first subscribed. It would be better if there was a direct link to 'Peer Review'.

I'm not really here

That's a really good point. I've noticed that the PR link disappears if you're logged out (as well as the Who's Online I think) and I don't understand why.

Maybe we could have them both back on even when we're logged out. Strangely, 'write an entry' is on there when signed out, which perhaps shouldn't be until you've logged in/registered.

smiley - ok Mina it was new subscribers I was thinking about.
My own view would be to make the Welcome page pick on the 'Unconventional' aspects of the Guide and not jump staight in to the mundain. smiley - biggrin

Yes, me too! That's why I thought it was odd that 'write an entry' was there. We don't want them diving in straight to creating entries - we want them to create their personal spaces first. smiley - biggrin

There are lots of people who've created entries, but not opened their space.

RFJS__ - trying to write an unreadable book, finding proofreading tricky

I always imagined 'Write an Entry' was there to entice people into joining when they clicked on it and discovered they had to join in order to write. Goodness knows whether it's ever worked, though.

There are lots I think - I keep my eye on the info page and look at new entries there - quite a few entries don't have a matching PS, so I can only assume that they've clicked that, and started from there. It's a bit arse about face if you ask me. Perhaps the site could be clever and tell newbies that now they've created an entry, they should open their space. smiley - biggrin

Why not make an entry to 'Your Space' a fundamantal requirement for an h2g2 subscription ?

We now have 'WRITE FOR US' under the h2g2 banner on the 'Talk' page. Like the general 'Welcome' page great emphasis is put on the Edited Guide and little attention is given to 'The Post' and other writing activities.
