h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Well, I poked around some, hating to start a new thread in a forum with this much stuff already accumulated, but I don't see this covered elsewhere.

Any chance of getting a bit of control over the formatting of Researchers' Home Pages, via letting us supply parameters to the XML engine that builds them? For example, the number of entries in the "Most Recent Forum Entries" section is fixed at ten. I tend to get involved in a lot of conversations and I would like to see, say, 25 entries there.

If I were designing the system, I would add a few conrols to the "Edit Page" page:

- Number of Recent Forum Entries to Show: 10
- Number of Journal Entries to Show: 5
- Number of Guide Entries to Show: 5
- Number of Approved Guide Entries to Show: 5

Probably these ought to be combo boxes, or have logic to enforce some reasonable maximum that won't overload the servers and page-generating engine.

I'm sure your developers have lots of other things to do but this one little change would make my own personal H2G2 experience much more enjoyable.

This is actally one of the things that is high on the priority list, it is something that is in hand at the moment.

You are certainly right about the number of conversations - list - I have the same problem myself, so I have talked to the techs about changing this.

It will happen, in the not too distant future.

You can already do that by using GuideML for your homepage. You'll need an external server to actually hold the picture, because H2G2 doesn't have provisions for uploading pictures (yet?). For more details, see the GuideML FAQ at http://www.h2g2.com/A187355 .

For advice on things like how to put up pictures on your homepage go to the GuideML Clinic and talk to Bruce. He has some nice bits of text you can copy off of the pages, which make it really easy to do..
