EF: A question about updates and the front page
Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Sep 29, 2006
We were discussing this hypothetically just the other day, but now we've got a test case.
The existing entry A137657 on Pizza is pretty pathetic.
Milos has produced a new version A14660525, has called it "Pizza in America and Beyond" and has submitted it to Peer Review.
I really think that Milos's entry is good enough to replace the Edited Entry and to become the definitive guide entry on pizza. So I think his entry should go into the Update Forum. But if it does, it won't get the kudos of appearing on the front page. I don't know Milos's opinion on the matter, but I don't think it would be encouraging to tell him that his entry will go into the guide but won't appear on the front page.
Eds, you said you were going to discuss this issue, so now's the time.

We'll try to schedule time to discuss this properly next week.

Gnomon, I am glad you brought it up, and Jim, I am glad you guys are going to discuss it. Would it be ok to let us know hat transpires? It is a subject that has popped up on several occasions in several threads.

I can't promise the answer will be instant, but as soon as we know what we will be able to do, we'll redefine the process on the Update Forum page.
I can't really stress this enough - we have to work with the resources available, and that included hours in the day. If we're going to be doing something extra, we have to juggle something else. At the moment, the update process involves copying the text over the existing entry, copying the researcher numbers, updating the entry, removing the Update Forum thread and adding an A-number to the top five list in the Front Page margin.
Perhaps one of these stages could be done by the Curators?

The curators will have no problem in doing some of those processes, once one of the Eds gives the go-ahead. Curators can't change the Front Page list, or move the thread, but they can do the actual update and add the researcher numbers to the entry.

Then that's something to add to our options. Cheers for the support, Gnomon.

And just to clear one thing up - Milos is a 'her', not a 'him'. It's broelan's alter ego if I remember rightly.

You're supposed to be enjoying Lawn Guyland, not pecking away at a keyboard. Now go out and have some fun
For what it's worth, I agree that the current entry on Pizza should be replaced. But having put the work into the entry that I've written I would feel a little jilted not seeing it featured prominently on the Front Page.
I can understand why it would be impractical for all updates to be featured with new entries, because some of them are just minor changes. But the entries that have been re-written top to bottom I think deserve a little more of the spotlight. Many of the earliest Edited Entries call for this kind of update.
I also think my entry, and others like it, belong in Peer Review. It is a brand new entry that needs the feedback Peer Review provides, which it wouldn't get in the update forum.

1. Could updates go in a seperate section of the front page? Just below new entries.
2. What happens to the text of replaced entries? Is it archived elsewhere? I'd just like to know, y'know.

I am enjoying Lawn Guyland, and it's made doubly fun by being on h2g2 as well
How did my name get on the new entry btw? Have I contributed something to it? I know my memory's a bit iffy these days but I honestly don't recall writing anything for this one.
