Troon

1 Conversation

Welcome to Troon, town of a hundred estate agents.

My home. Troon, Ayrshire (not Cornwall).
I live near the Harbour, and I have lived there for many years now.
What I refer to as Troon is only the locality of the main town centre.
Education
Primary

There are four primary schools that I know of, all of which provide a good education.

Troon Primary - I spent a year at this school, and, honestly, I hated it. But I am told that it has improved and now provides a good education and as it is a large school, it can accept many new entries at a time.

Barassie Primary - I have never been to Barassie primary, and I don't know much about it. I have been told that it focuses mainly on the academic, but I'm not certain.

Struthers Primary - Again, I have little experience of this school, having never been inside, but it seems to be a very good school, nurturing for the academic and the practical alike.

St Patrick's Primary - (My old school) A great school, small, (one class to a year) but good nonetheless. The open plan interior encourages children to be quiet, without being scolded, and the facilities are excellent. I have to say from personal experience that the best teacher a child could have is Mrs Burston, and to the best of my knowledge she has no plans to retire in the near future.

Secondary

There is only one High School within Troon itself, but many pupils of Troon schools go on to go to other high schools in the area, like Kyle Academy, or Queen Margaret Academy, both situated in the nearby large town of Ayr.
I am, at the moment in Queen Margaret Academy, so this is the one I will tell you about. I hope to put in more data as I find people who go to the other schools. Queen Margaret is a good school, it is catholic - based, but I am an atheist, and I find it excellent. The education is very good; I believe it is normally in the top 10 in the Scottish education league tables, etc.
The classes are small enough to allow good attention from every teacher, the transport is provided, and the computer and dining facilities are very good.

Shops

Estate Agents

Estate agents get a category to themselves purely because there are so many of them. The local average prices for houses in Troon are slightly higher than national average, but it is worth it to live in the area. Normally, a one bedroom flat will sell for around £30,000 But now there are new modern schemes being built, and I believe they are quite good quality, and selling around £25,000, with two small bedroom, but I'm not certain.
I think there may be as many as 8 Estate agents in the 4.5 streets that make up the town centre.

Charity shops

I know charity shops of old, indeed I visit all of Troon's 5 - I think - stores every week, in search of books. And indeed, I often find what I am looking for. If you need anything you will find it there. And today, I must add a small section about short-stay charity shops. They infrequently open for a week or so, and at them is to be found all sorts of marvels, books, crockery and all sorts of excellent gems that need to be seen to be believed.

Cafes

Another monumental task is to describe the town's Cafeterias. There are many subsections, and I will attempt to describe them.
First,

Small cafes

There are many of these, and each is praised for its own certain thing. I will start with my favourite, the Beach Cafe. Situated two minutes walk from both the town centre and the beach, at the corner of Welbeck crescent and west Portland street, it has a lovely view, it is quite cheap, and the owner, Ida, is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I go in once or twice a week, on my way home after school.

The second, the Venice, situated near the Templehill end of Ayr Street, is a brilliant place, much favoured for its ice cream. I have been going here for years and it does good food, excellent ice cream, and charges reasonable prices.

Toggs is a two-minute walk away from both of the above, placed nicely on Templehill, and again does good food and has quite good prices.

The Strawberry Cushion is one I know of old, is situated on Church Street, and it provides excellent food, and a good atmosphere, as well as a small amount of outside seating on those hot summer days.

Caffarel is one I don’t know much about, on Academy Street, it is nice inside, and does good food for good prices.

Chip shops (chippies)
It is common in Troon for Chippies to also serve as cafes, but for ease I will put them in this category.

The Marina is situated a short walk from the very centre of town, at the top of Templehill, and is more or less a takeaway, although on nice days there are plastic tables and chairs placed outside, for you to enjoy your takeaway on.
