Thanks six7s. Great effort. It has kept me busy while my daughter has been sleeping. I'm confident of all my answers except 23 down. I'm not sure how the bronze and gold come into the answer but that might just be my ignorance rather than my answer.

That is very clever. I am very impressed with that clue. I did have the right answer, I just couldn't boggle my mind enough to work it out completely. Brilliant!!

BTW, sorry about the lack of subject. I realised that I had missed it just as I posted. I wouldn't normally do that cos it annoys me immensely.

I'm afraid it reminds me of a (very old ) joke...
One day Jesus happened upon an angry mob intent on stoning a woman, allegedly of ill-repute
So he cried out "Let those among you cast the 1st stone"
Barely audible amidst the sound of rocks hitting the ground was the shuffling of an elderly woman, pushing her way to the front
From within her robes, she revealed an enormous boulder with which she pummeled the accused
