The Vogon destructor fleet had not anticipated this number of sub-ether devices being simultaneously deployed. Their systems overloaded while denying all the connection requests and they had to leave without destroying the Earth.

The one alien on the planet who didn't get picked up gave a big sigh and thought: "It would probably have helped if I hadn't referred to them as a destructor fleet instead of a constructor fleet. Right now I could be composing poetry with the captain or shouting 'resistance is the ratio of voltage over current'."
