Bridgeton Cross - Brigton X - The Toll.

Originally Barrowfield Toll

An intersection of seven roads.

London Road East
Dalmarnock Road
Main Street
James Street
London Road West
Orr Street
Olympia Street

The 'Umbrella', a cast Iron Pavillion was
sited here in 1870.
The public House at the corner of Dalmarnock Road was called
'The Cactus'

My Grandfather -Danny McLaren- had the newspaper
pitch at the Toll and was selling papers there
during the Blackout in WWII.
in later years, my uncle Danny took over this role
and was helped with the 'Mail-an-the-Post' on Saturday nights
by my 'faither' - Charlie. The pitch left our Family in the
'eighties when my uncle Danny died.

the famous (infamous?)'Brigton Lavvies', -now closed- are here.

Old Bridgeton Train Station was located in London Road near to,
and across the Road from Landressy St, which itself has the Public
Library and 'The Keystane' (Burns' Bar) as primary attractions.

The 'Olympia' Picture hall at the corner of Orr St/Olympia St is
now falling to bits. Although a listed building, it is badly
neglected, and it is only a matter of time before it gets described
as a 'dangerous building' - guess what happens then.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
