In a windows environment you can access the characters with number codes of 255 or lower by holding down the Alt key while typing the 4 digit number code. That is hold alt, type a preceding zero for all of them, and then type their 3 digit number code, then release the Alt key.
This seems to work on the Guide for Characters between 1 and 255. Other characters, even when successfully accessed through Alt key combinations later appear as something like ☻.
