Author: Croz- Oh No, Zak's been Ducknapped!!!! Read ThePost for further details! - U96736

Help me free Zak, let's get this through Peer Review.

Ok I've been working on this entry for abut 7 months now, and I finally got it finished. It's an in depth entry on how to set up your own ADSL broadband wireless network from scratch. Any comments, criticisms and other stuff gratefully received.

Croz

Ausnahmsweise, wie üblich (Consistently inconsistent)

Hi Croz,

Looks very good.

Would it help or confuse if you mentioned why 192.168.*.* is special (and that there are other ranges)?

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the
following three blocks of the IP address space for private networks:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Are there any problems with VPN's (NATS and PATS)?

I live miles from cable and DSL, but am hoping to get wireless soon (Not a wireless private network, but a high speed wireless Internet connection). Do you think I can then use a wireless home network too?

Awu.

ZSF,

I've not included Macs as although I have some info on setting up an Apple AirPort up for wireless broadband with a Mac runnin MacOS 9.x, I've not yet had an opportunity to try it out like I have with the windows setups. I'll stick it in anyways. I'll try and get something on using it with MacOS X as well, and if I'm on a roll, Linux smiley - smiley

Awu,

Yeah I'll probably mention the 192.168.*.* and the 10.*.*.* ranges as being reserved for local networks briefly. I didn't know about 172.16-31.*.*. There should be no problems with VPNs as some routers can function as a NAT box if they have a built in hardware firewall. If it doesn't, it's just a matter of putting another box in between the router and modem.

I can't really forsee any issues with using a home wireless network in conjunction with a high speed wireless internet connection as as far as I'm aware these run on completely different frequencies.

Hi, Great entry! though I have to admit I solve the Broadband wire problem by tucking it neatly under the carpet and don't really have any need for a wireless network! I was just thinking that it might be a good idea to remove your name from the title of the piece,

Hiya Z smiley - smiley

My name isn't in the title of the piece, it's to notify the Italics that the entry forms part of the five entries needed to fulfil the kidnapper's demands. F19585?thread=243646

Hi Croz,

I forgot to mention this entry

A592607

It mentions wireless, but concentrates on thin ethernet. I'm sure the two entries can co-exist, but maybe you should include a link to the first one?

I can't believe I forgot about that entry, it was that one that inspired me to do this, along with me getting broadband in the first place smiley - smiley I've now corrected the oversight, I've stuck the link in.

It appears the config for OSX is almost if not identical to that for mac classic, so that's gone in with MacOS 8.6-9.x

Gnomon - time to move on

This is a good entry, and should have no problem making it into the Edited Guide. smiley - ok

There are just one or two stylistic points to be tidied up.

"There is several different wireless networking standards all with similar sounding names but may or may not be compatible with each other."

should be:

"There are several different wireless networking standards, all with similar sounding names, that may or may not be compatible with each other."

"For those without wireless support or an ADSL or Cable modem, the total amount for the equipment required will."

There's something missing from the end of that sentence.

"1 or more PC" --> "1 or more PCs"

"your computers Operating System" --> "your computer's Operating System"

"as is does not" --> "as it does not"

I've sorted out that and changed the unfinished sentence as I couldn't quite recall what I was originally putting in there.
