Do the ski schools have any lower limit on the age of children they take?

Problem with the Childcare section...

Can't speak for all European countries, but certainly in France, the creche/nursery staff will not give children any medicines (for insurance reasons), so there's not a lot of point in writing instructions.

When I read the title I thought it belonged on a list of things "not" to do with children.smiley - erm
Inexperienced skiers can barely take care of themselves, never mind watch over their charges.

Babies..well, I'm not going to be very complimentary about this entry having read that far, so I better leave. Sorry MJ.

I've seen groups of 4-year-olds in the Ski School. In general, children appear to be better beginners than adults. So if the family have never skied before, the children will probably advance quicker than the adults.

My son started skiing at four... And he's now a better skier than I am (or at least has a great deal more confidence than I have) and he's seven.

Having had a quick look at Les Arcs website it looks as the ESF start taking kids as of 4 years of age - 6 years old for full-day collective lessons .

Thanks for the input (smiley - erm @ post 4 though...smiley - huh)

I've added what I can, bear in mind this IS a Flea Market Rescue and not a lot of it is my own work, I am only attempting to improve what was already there and looked at in a positive manner the first time it went into PR smiley - smiley

Thanks again, if anyone has any information they think needs to go in, let me know!

Friends of mine are just back from a skiing holiday with their children. One thing the adults should not do: go down the slope in front with the children behind. Imagine their surprise when they got to the bottom and the children failed to arrive after them!

you could mention that for children one-piece ski-suits are way better than trousers & jackets (because snow often gets inside)

I'm not keen on having a string around glasses/goggles,the opportunities for self strangulation are scarily evident there, goggles are better for the littlies, and they usually have a nice, wide elastic strap to keep them on the head.

apart from that, and the fact that the skiing season is just about over...

smiley - ok
(oh and we always take pencils/pens and a notebook for the kids to make stories, draw pictures, or to wrie rude messages to their siblings)

You could mention that it is possible to safely cross country ski with a child on your back (from 12 months) in the appropriate and safe child carrier. Be very careful to check that they are warm enough, and don't stay out for too long in any case.

Alpine skiing with a child on your back is not a good idea for safety, cold and boredom reasons.

Did you mention helmets for kids skiing? It's essential, in any case. You could also mention preparing your children for the ski lift, as they can find them quite frightening (esp on snowboards) - for chair lifts they must always be with an adult.

More later perhaps,

A friend of mine's child found the ski lift very frightening, particularly when he fainted, fell out of it and broke his back.smiley - sadface

But he made a full recovery.smiley - smiley

Glad to hear he made a full recovery. It is possible to have some very nasty accidents involving ski lifts, which is why children need supervision and explanation when using them.
