A Conversation for Curry, A Beginner's Guide

Eating Curry

Post 1

Demon Drawer

The people of the sub-continent do not generally eat curry without the eating utensils the West can not do without, ie a knife and fork. The meat and vegetables are deliberately cut to be bite-size and then eaten with the fingers often with the assitance of nan bread or rice.

Cool chutneys are also served with the more spicey varieties to prevent the eater from over heating. These are either made with yoghurt or fruit.

Eating with the fingers leaves the fingers stained by the spices. This propably accounts for the finger decorations of Indian women as they are constantly working with the spices in food preparation as well as eating.

So give it a go throw away your crockery and savour a curry in its natural form wrapped in nan straight from the fingers.
