Red Dwarf And Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - Comparison

0 Conversations

When I first heard of Red Dwarf from a close friend I thought this is definitely a rip off of H2G2. These ideas, whilst not dispelled, were shrunken when i watched the first series. It bore many simliarities to H2G2 such as there being one remanant of the human race and his only wish being that he would like to return home. The simliarities however largely stop there. The difference between the intelligent if a little barmy but above all middle class Arthur Dent and the coarse, unclean, thick Dave lister is immesurable. Whilst Arthur Dent enjoys, in the words of the great Douglas Adams, Tea in the back garden Lister preffers Lager milkshake and King Prawn Biriani.

These two stranded souls both cannot get back to Earth but for very different reasons. Arthur Dent's Earth has been turned into what is essentially rubble whilst Lister's Earth, though possibly still intact is 30 Billion miles and 3 million years away. Their travelling companions could not be any different. Mr Dent travels with a little man from Betelgeuse 5, an intelligent but insane man with two heads who is also from Betelgeuse and a very smart beautiful woman from his home planet. Mr Lister travels with Senile computer, a cleanliness mad android, a terrifically vain cat and the hologram of his dead bunkmate. I know who I would rather travel with.

In conclusion I have to say that my fears of Red Dwarf being an H2G2 rip-off have been reduced almost to nothingness. I can honestly say that the similarities are so minute that no-one could call red dwarf an H2G2 rip off, thanks for reading.
