I understood that witch comes from Wicce meaning
'wise one'. It might be worth mentioning that many women presecuted as 'witches' in the maleficent sense were actually midwives and those who knew old herbal healing recipes. The linking of witches with the devil is a purely christian invention, bastardising horned gods such as Cerrunos. It was Dr Gerald Gardner who pretty much debunked the myths surrounding witches in the 1940's.
