A 'What if?' entry about John F Kennedy's decision to go to Dallas instead of Gettysburg...

I don't think you should describe it as his infamous gaffe "ich bin eir Berliner". For a start, he said "ein", not "eir".
More seriously, the word Berliner in German means a person from Berlin and nothing else. While "ich bin ein Berliner" is not particularly good grammar, it was immediately understood by the people present. It is only in America that people think that this meant something other than what was intended.

I agree. It was really a nice little speech of Kennedy's. And even if you're going to call it a gaffe, it's not infamous. Infamous implies it's notorious, but it was completely innocent and a nice little effort.
Good work.

How about:
"he spoke the line 'Ich bin ein Berliner' at the Berlin City Hall"?

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Oct 30, 2004
I didn't see the entry before the part relating to the "Ich bin ein Berliner" quote was changed, but now it seems rather a non sequitur. If the quote *is* worth mentioning, then I think it ought to be 'the tour of Europe', not 'a tour of Europe' - he only made that quote once didn't he?
"but he was previously engaged with..." doesn't seem quite right. Something like 'but a previously arranged tour of Europe prevented him from doing so' sounds more correct to my ears. Since the 'Berliner' quote has nothing to do with Kennedy and Gettysburg, it could easily be added as a footnote, just for reference and/or interest.

...I've made some changes again.
I do feel that the phrase is famous since at the very least it was copied by Diamond Joe Quimby in an episode of The Simpsons.
I'm hoping this version makes everyone happy.

It made me happy, Jimi.
The 'Berliner' statement, rightly or wrongly, does have a certain... je ne sais quoi.
However you fixed it, it looks fine now.
