Okay, we'll have to argue about where it originated, but I expect it occurs in slightly different forms.

oh my lawd it would appear to have been going on since time immemorial (well, not exactly immemorial, but I'm sure you get the ... o4gdnessache!0)
... and everywhere (where two or three drunkards, I mean scholars, are gathered together that is). Well, how come I have never ever come across it b4 and this despite having attended tow unis, two or 3 colleges, visted 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,910,11,12,13 or so of the bgerz and never once even been offered a drink, not to say been enebriated into the initiation rites of this no doubt bacchananalian i.e. anti-Xtianish pagan in other words thingummyjig. Phew!

They probably didn't offer you a drink because they didn't want to waste it on odd people from other places. Students can be very stingy when the overdraft limit is getting near.

I was offered a drink within days of getting to Caius; within days it was noted that a drink was now owed. I asked the man if he kept a ledger. No, he did not, but he did just want to get into my working-class pants. Not pennying, just tight-anal-fisti-clubs...[never joined, officially]
