Where I Live: Vienna to Wiener Neustadt

Here is probably one of the lesser known 'sights' of our area. What looks like a rather straight river is actually a canal which around 1800 linked Vienna to Wiener Neustadt, a town about 50 km to the south. Later they made it a bit longer towards Hungary. It was actually planned to build the canal all the way to Trieste (isn't that crazy?), but that never happened. They used horse drawn boats to transport wares to the city.

The canal end in Vienna actually doesn't exist anymore and the whole structure got shorter over time , but there's still quite a long section in tact (about 36km). People like to take walks along it or take bicycle trips or they even go boating.
