This week's title is Lovers' Meetings. Clockwise from upper left: A circular staircase photographed by Carol M Highsmith, two turtles making whoopie photographed by FWR, a yellow crocus from Austria, a vivid sunrise from Scotland, a glimpse of a heron in a Scottish river, a foggy day in Austria, a lenticular cloud over Cleethorpes, UK, light filtering through the slats of a barn in Pennsylvania, a pencil sketch of a man wearing a suit that is black on one side and white on the other, six fuzzy grey ducklings staring at the camera, a painting of two bald men sitting at a table with shadows cast behind them and a cat, yawning, a blackbird on top of an evergreen, a field and woods frosted with fresh snowfall, and a flock of geese scattered about the snow in New England.<br/>
.

We continue to monitor the decline of western civilisation while maintaining our own high standards. Nonetheless, among the doom-and-gloom-scrolling of 2025, we stop to note that, in a sense, things were ever thus – to wit, if civilisation is declining, it's been taking a long time about it.

Another editor who's a Broadway fan posted a photo this morning from 1902. It showed a foxy lady in a fancy gown sitting alone on an elaborate stage full of chairs.

The still was from the then-new musical, The Silver Slipper. I looked it up and started searching for more stills. After all, part of the play took place on the Planet Venus. Unfortunately, I haven't found any photos yet.

Also unfortunately, I did find some of the jokes.

Edna Wallace Hopper: What have I done?

Cyril Scott: I don't know. I haven't been watching you lately.

I will stop complaining about the dialogue in Hamilton

Needless to say, our jokes are much better than that. We also have better photographs. Well, some of the photographs are better. Others are just. . .

Let me explain. A couple of our photographers seem to have invented a new genre. See if you can locate it in the pages that follow. Express your opinion about them. Also read the jokes, etc. Discover some new fiction, and some old fiction. Look at the birdies and go 'Aw.' Be shocked (!) at the x-rated wildlife photo. Discover more goodies than you can shake a stick at. (Why are you shaking a stick at your computer? That's how accidents happen.)

Read. Comment. Share. Send.Me.Stuff. Send me spring flower photos, I dare you. Everybody else does. They make me jealous. We still have snow.

Take care, and have a wonderful week.

Quote of the Week:
Sir:

I have read the story Benjamin Button in Colliers and I wish to say that as a short story writer you would make a good lunatic I have seen many peices [sic] of cheese in my life but of all the peices of cheese I have ever seen you are the biggest peice. I hate to waste a peice of stationary on you but I will.
