From a generic Western-European oriented point of view, I would say that a lot of what the Democratic pair stands for is (or used to be) pretty much the standard around here. So I sometimes take offence at the description as extreme-left wing for things I consider to be pretty normal just left-of-centre issues..

I feel the same way. 
And it's tiresome because you can't really have conversations any more. Somebody will go off at the slightest mention of an opinion contrary to the house of cards they've got stacked up in their heads.
