St Émilion
Editor's Note: Saint-Emilion Monolithic Church is in southwestern France. It was carved out of rock in the 12th Century, is partly subterranean, and is on the watchlist of the World Monuments Fund because it is endangered. It's named for a miracle-working Breton monk who fled there in the 8th Century to get away from some mean Benedictines. I've never known a mean Benedictine – just some nutty ones – but that's what the World Monuments Fund says.
