They could have taken the Snowdon mountain railway up LLanberis to the summit. Unless they couldn't wait till March 23rd, when it opens again after winter.

Maybe the Angel should have been clearer and tell them it doesn't have to be in person. Just a DM to Mountain Rescue would suffice.

In the carol the first word is 'Go', so if the smiley - angel says 'go' instead of 'post a postcard to' or 'send a DM to', it does imply a degree of travel.

I see that you can get to the Snowdon mountain railway by railway, in that there's a miniature railway around the lake across the road from the mountain railway's lower station, but I don't think that the miniature railway connects to the national rail network.

What's the nearest mountain to where you live, by the way?
(A mountain being a summit 2,000 ft / 600 metres above sea level and/or at least 1,000 ft/300 metres above its surrounding area).

That one is tricky. As the crow flies, anywhere in Wales could be a contender. Looking at travel time, probably the French Jura or the Alps (700-800 km). The Ardennes (200km) and Vosges (500km) are closer but probably barely satisfy the 1000 feet base to to top requirements

I live at 3 metres above sea level. Our highest 'mountain' is 344 metres above sea level and we share that 'summit' with Belgium and Germany.

There have been plans to build a 2km mountain in the Netherlands, but it has been shelved, being too expensive / needing too much material. Ideas included digging an extra Panama Canal if they let us have the excess material. There were some concerns on what effect such a mountain would have on the surrounding climate and how far it would sink into the soft ground.

smiley - rofl When I lived in Bonn, they all told me that the Drachenfels was 'the highest mountain in the Netherlands'. (Lots of weekend tourists.)

Alpe d'Huez in France is also called a Dutch Mountain, because it is a favourite for climbing on a bicycle (not me)

smiley - cool I didn't know that! Makes sense: You take your mountains where you can find them.

There is an annual fundraiser for Cancer Research. People get sponsored for every time they climb that mountain by bike (target is six times in one day, meaning 84km with 6700m ascent)
