Good point. Maybe a 
's skin is a tad magical - it doesn't show in mirrors and can go from being human to being a 
, so perhaps linked to that it is very difficult to pierce? So with a sharpened stake and a mallet you can just about get to the 
, but if you try and press a truncheon into a vampire's chest by hand you're not going to get very far...?
