St Nicholas, Nancy

St Nicholas symbols in Nancy by Superfrenchie.
St Nicolas in the middle, with his donkey, the three little children and the butcher. The one on the far left is his counterpart for naughty children, Père Fouettard. I don't know if he has an equivalent in English "Father Whip" or something? He gives coal to the bad kids.

St Nicolas is the patron saint of Lorraine. Traditionally he was the one to bring presents, on Dec 6, not Santa at Christmas. Nowadays, he mostly brings sweets. He's celebrated in roughly the far North and East of France. You can easily find little chocolate bishops for the children (very similar to the chocolate Santa's, but different clothes).
