I felt it was a bit weird to focus so much effort on trying to build a universe of creatures BEFORE you've shown you can actually write a couple of decent films.
One of the advantages Marvel have had is using their paper comics as a proofing stage, to work out the most interesting stories and beats with lots of writers, and critics who poor over such things. I don't see the same font of failure available to the other world builders, so they seemingly must fail at the big extensive stage instead.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
