They're a funny lot in Sussex. It's easy to find something sinister in the bonfire parades that hark back to a time when Catholics were persecuted.
Was it really Burgess Hill, Bluebottle? That's my neck of the woods.

It was indeed Burgess Hill – you can see the BHBS standing for Burgess Hill Bonfire Society in the bottom picture. I've got friends who moved there.
Although technically they say it's about commemorating the prosecuted Protestants, the Lewes Martyrs that Bloody Mary burnt at the stake, as much as commemorating the death of Guy Fawkes at a time when Catholics were persecuted. (At the end of the day everyone on both sides would have been dead by now even if they hadn't been burnt alive, there's blame on both sides so we could put the past behind us and move forward with marshmallows*. )

* I was very tempted to write 'and only persecute Scientologists' but didn't.
