When I suffered a career ending injury, an 'actual degreed psychiatrist' recommended I take everyone whose incompetence had contributed to my downfall, and write a short story with them in it.
Emphasise their flaws, get a bit of faux revenge, punish the characters by all means, but maybe also get a little closure when I realize they probably had no malice in them, they were just really really stupid.
Anyway, 80 odd thousand words later, (not exactly a short story) I did feel a little better!

With a lot of Discworld novels, apart from the personalities involved, I also think I have an idea of where Sir Terry went on holiday. (Australia, Egypt, France, Greece, Middle-East).
