I don't know if you need to know what your story is all about before you start writing. Can't writing be a journey of discovery? So you start out writing a story about two brothers who fall out over a woman, and find you've ended up writing about the cost of love and of courage. Mind you, you might need to rewrite your story half a dozen times before you find all this out.

How true! The thing to do, though, is to go back and pretend you *meant* to do that.
