Yet more wise words indeed!

"All of these people did rewrites. All of them had editors. That's why they're so good."

Yes indeed. Mention of editors makes me think of things such as the Harry Potter books. The first two were tightly edited and then the later ones less so as they became bigger and bigger... Some people like how the rich background detail is all in each book, but I couldn't help reading them with my Editor hat on and thinking "This scene (eg the homage to the UK's Prime Minister) is fine, but if it were removed from the book the story would get going much more quickly"...

The scene wouldn't need to be thrown away, but it could be used in some other book instead so that both books would be concise rather than being one weighty tome that is physically difficult to read smiley - ok

Analogies with Entries in h2g2, too, and the Peer Review and Editing processes here smiley - ok

That's a good observation, Sasha. smiley - smiley

The first time I noticed that, I was at university and reading one of Leon Uris' books. They were big blockbuster tomes of the 'doorstop' variety. And this book had many errors and unfelicitous phrases in the last few chapters.

I concluded that Mr Uris wasn't good with deadlines, and that his editors hadn't had enough time to tidy up before going to print. smiley - rofl
