It occurred to me that the word 'saboteur' came from the French 'sabot' or clog.
I don't know who the first saboteurs were. French revolutionaries perhaps?

Could be. 
I know the first recorded strikers were in ancient Egypt.

Sabotage is derived from putting your clog into machinery to break it. (the machinery, and probably theclog as well)
