A Conversation for Writing Right with Dmitri: Getting from Here to There
Why do we read this drivel?

That's a quote for anyone jumping in without reading this week's Writing Right.....
More importantlly......
Why do we write this drivel? (Even if we know nobody is going to read it?)
What's in the fridge and what Stuff happens?
Why are there eleven books by my bedside that I can't, just can't, get into?
Will I stop writing idle drivel after next week's edition?
Why am I still thinking about that fridge?
Why does nights feel like a week of jetlag......"Titanic" anyone?
Why do we read this drivel?

If you go on Creative Writing classes, you learn about the plot arc. (What's more, I believe the theory of plot construction goes back as far as Aristotle.)
The plot structure I learned about has seven points;
introduction of protagonist
encounter with main antagonist (which should also give a spur for action)
first reversal. (Protagonist meets an obstacle which stops him/her and makes him/her change course)
midpoint scenes. Sometimes the antagonist wins, sometimes the protagonist. (I found this unclear.)
second reversal. The protagonist's lowest point
climax. The protagonist either wins or loses.
resolution. A new stability is achieved.
Needless to say there are lots of plots which break all these 'rules'

I personally go for the 9 step method:
go a week on no sleep
go a week fueled on caffeine and sugar
go a week with bloody animal Olympics happening downstairs
a week without alcohol
a week of stupid dreams when you actually get five minutes to yourself!
survive all kinds of strange and weird things going bump in the night
take all of above, shake well, grab pen, phone, ipad, sweet wrapper etc and scribble away ignoring every grammatical and punctuational device ever invented by clever people
annoy DG at stupid o'clock as brain and body clock cannot comprehend time differences or indeed time of day here...
recover from nights in time to have the Post quite co-incidentally recommend you do exactly the opposite!
spend day playing with pretty pictures to illustrate above mentioned drivel.
Realize that's definitely more than nine steps!
,,,,,,probably why....yup....answered my own question there!
Key: Complain about this post
