I believe the basting threads are the roughly long-stitched threads that hold up the different pieces together so they don't move while you sew them together properly. 
You're welcome, always happy to help with cultural enlightenment. 
I both really want to read this play and at the same time am not sure how my sanity (or what's left of it) would get through...
