Thanks for this. smiley - smiley I'd never heard of this story.

It sounds sad but I suppose nineteenth century literature is like that. I think it dealt more than present day literature does with issues around bereavement - children losing parents and parents losing children. The rate of infant mortality and of the death of mothers in childbirth was much higher than in the west today. I remember going round the cemetery at Howarth, near the Bronte museum and being struck by the number of graves of children. smiley - cry

Thanks mvp smiley - biggrin

Yes, the story does reflect the time when death in childbirth and infant mortality were more common... It is a happysad story, though, that it is philosophical about the sad side of life, but does end on a positive note that Maurice is happy with his real parents at last... smiley - brave

I didn't know about this one, either. It doesn't sound as philosophical as Frankenstein.

Thanks for adding to our knowledge. smiley - smiley

You can call me TC

Thank you for this. I have nothing to add. The fact that Laurette's mother wrote odes to Mary's husband sounds intriguing, though.

Sorry I missed your question until now, TC - I shall have to ask the Sub-editor to add a footnote with the title of the poem, as that helps to explain why the poem was written...
