Burning people is wrong too

It's sobering to find, in a quiet country town, reminders of a more violent past.
The nearby town of Lewes is famous for its annual bonfire parade, which commemorates the 17 Protestant martyrs who were burnt there in the reign of Queen Mary.

I've heard about this - from Icy North, I believe...he's a big Lewes booster, and this year, he had to explain the burning crosses to a nervous Southerner.
Periodically, one of my Baptists gets hold of 'Foxe's Booke of Martyrs'. I try to discourage them from reading it. I remember how disturbed I was to find it on my father's bookshelf...I despair of explaining Mary Tudor to them.
Anyway, you're absolutely right! Signs of the past - disquieting ones - are everywhere. And we must say, with Joseph Conrad, 'This, too, has been one of the dark places of the earth.'
