I found 'Restoration' one of Rose Tremain's most striking books. I admire her as a writer, because her characterisations are subtle and believable, but what strikes me about 'Restoration' is the shape of the plot. It follows the career of Robert Merivel, a young medical student, who is seduced by the self-indulgence of the court of Charles II. He is persuaded to marry the youngest of Charles' mistresses, to give her some respectability. When Robert makes the mistake of falling in love with her, the King banishes him.
This story provides a very strong plot arc. It is almost religious: temptation, sin, punishment, repentance and redemption. It is also interesting in that, although Robert is a lady's man, the two most important people in his life are men. On one side, Charles is hedonistic and amoral but capable of generosity. On the other, Robert's friend Pearce, a Quaker he met at mdical school, is stern and asetic. The two almost fight for Merivel's soul.

Interesting! I've never read any of her books.

I was just reading about her, the article says she approaches her subjects 'from unexpected angles, concentrating her attention on unglamorous outsiders.'

Yes? No? You agree?

I wonder how long it took her to write a book like this?

She must do a lot of research, like you do.
