A VIEW OF BURGESS HILL

The town has donned its party gear
to welcome Christmas. Against a sky
grey enough to weep, garlands
of silver, gold and blue swing
between lamp-posts. Plastic Christmas
trees twinkle in the shopping centre.

The main street ambles down the hill
towards an undistinguished
Victorian church. The old shops flaunt
defiant gables, swathed in places
with black on stucco. Modern buildings sulk,
flat-roofed hulks with peeling paint.

The street fizzles out in huddles
of charity shops, ‘to Let’ signs
leering over boarded properties.
A forest of bulbous plants
is petrified on the pavement.
From here, the town spreads like fungus

over clay, where cattle once grazed
hock- deep in mud. At last we glimpse
the Downs, inked in violet across sky:
an ocean wave frozen in mid flow.
They call us to climb, consider
the world from a wider perspective.
