A friend of mine works in nature conservation. They were carrying out, of all things, a butterfly survey (aka 'transit') at a local beauty spot in the North Downs last weekend. They were expecting good numbers in the unseasonal warm and sunny weather.
This was until the butterflies you described turned up. It's not that they're unwelcome - they're well-behaved and colourful, and use the site cafe, which brings in much-needed revenue. It's just the numbers. They had to open up one of the wildlife areas to accommodate them all - the area where they were doing the butterfly transit. The survey turned out to be a complete waste of time.
