Is it worth saying a bit more about the Leverhulme Trust? It's mentioned briefly in the final paragraph, but it's still a major funder of research - according to their annual report (2015) they spend about £80m a year on research across nearly all fields. They're a major part of the UK research funding landscape.

A very enjoyable read.

One minor typo: 'producrs' – I'm guessing Products rather than producers?

You mention that Gladstone was Prime Minister, but would it be worth explaining a bit more about him for those who aren't British. He served four terms as Liberal Prime Minister in 1868-1874, 1880-1885, 1886, 1892-1894 before resigning at the age of 84. (I always wonder why the US has only had one President - Cleveland - who served two non-consecutive terms – even taking into account the 2-term limit - whereas the UK's had 17 Prime Ministers who have, though Gladstone holds the record with 4 separate terms).

I thought his house burning down needed a bit more detail. Was it arson, then, by suffragettes or suffragists?
Princess Beatrice was, of course, Governor of the Isle of Wight 1896-1944 and was the last non-donkey occupant of Carisbrooke Castle. (My great-granddad was in Princess Beatrice's Isle of Wight Rifles before the Great War, but fortunately for me left to join the Royal Navy, which is just as well because they were pretty much wiped out at Gallipoli – despite what the Australians say – with the survivors all-but killed off at Gaza.).

I've added more links and have also added a bit more about the fire - the book I read was certain it was arson, but new research indicates that the Suffragettes may have just taken credit for the fire without doing anything as it could have started accidentally.

Fascinating family. Great entry.

Imagine building a private drive for your carriage ride to work that was so big it was used to store thousands of military vehicles during the war, Brimstage Road and The Lever Causeway still have the old gunnery pill boxes on the approach.

Yes, the roads in Port Sunlight are impressively wide, too Interesting about pillboxes - I learned a bit about them after reading an Entry in h2g2, but must investigate the Wirral ones some more, as there are a good number around, as you say.
