I was given a copy of Uncle Tom's Cabin when I was maybe 10. I started raeding it, but couldn't finish.
Possibly because I was too young to grasp what was happening.
But it also might have been because it wasn't much like Tex Avery's versions...

I haven't seen Tex Avery's version, and now I'm worried. They weren't very politically correct back then...
Mrs Stowe's book is not very readable. I read it at about 14, and sighed. She meant well...

Ok, so at least it's not something wrong with me. *wipes forehead*

You know, there were about 1000 novels and expose books about slavery in the decades before the Civil War. It had a lot to do with awareness of the issue. Of course, most of them weren't particularly well written.
If you've seen the film '12 Years a Slave', that's a true story based on a book from the time. It's amazingly well written, too. I'd recommend it rather than Stowe's novel.
