A Conversation for Hymn #19: Simple Gifts and Other Shaker Songs

Shaker Children

Florida Sailor All is well with the world

Back when my little Sister was in school she took a course in Interior Decorating. She knew I had studied Architectural Drafting so she often asked me about her lessons.

In one of their sections the Teacher introduced Shaker furniture, with a brief outline of their believes.

After hearing that they were celibate, she was puzzled by all of the baby and child items they had made. She told me she had asked her teacher and she told her that sometimes they might break the rules and accidents happen. Please Lord protect us from 'experts' who make up what they do not know.

The truth is that the Shaker communities offered sanctuary to any orphaned or unwanted children. Death in child-birth in the 19th century was not uncommon, and they offered an option for a father who found himself with a new-born and no one to raise them.

Established families were also welcome to join, if they agreed to dissolve their family unit. The Mother and Father would have to agree to live separately and their children moved in with the other foundlings.

At their 18th birthday each of the children were given the option of remaining with the group, or returning to the world.
