Thanks Dmitri - I'll dip into as many of these as I can.
I'm sure many modern pop hits were lifted from hymn tunes - I've heard about legions of would-be songwriters combing the dusty archives for anything that prevents them falling foul of draconian plagiarism laws.

And vice versa - one of the objections to Methodist hymns was that Wesley and Watts pinched pop tunes for their verses. Respectable people were scandalised...
