there are slightly messier, but undeniably humorous second option
-- the grammar of this needs to be sorted. It starts out talking about something plural but changes to a singular second option.
Following this, suggest doughnut-bobbing
-- I think this would be better as:

It was supposed that the better you are at apple bobbing, the more likely you'd soon get married and be fruitful2.
-- The grammar of this is wrong. "you are" doesn't match with "you would".

Out of curiosity, how widespread is Apple Bobbing? I certainly often saw it growing up, but normally associated with late summer and Bonfire Night – we didn't celebrate Halloween..

It was certainly common in Ireland at Halloween when I was a child but I haven't heard of it recently. Nobody thinks of apples as a treat only available at one time of the year now.

Nice rescue
I saw Apple Bobbing once when I was a child, but it wasn't my idea of fun. I therefore haven't been looking out for it since then, but it does seem to have gone out of fashion, that nobody mentioned it at the Apple Festival I helped at at the end of September...
