Having seen the 1925 version (I am sure I have the the '59 version too but I can't remember it as well), the ship scene is what stayed in my mind.

"Let's build and crew six real triremes, put them to sea and then get them to sink each other" has got to be the best selling point for a film idea.

Special effects? Nah. Let's just do it!

I seem to recall that Jim Cameron's original plan for Titanic was to build a full-size reconstruction of the ship, steam out to the middle of the Atlantic, and then film it sinking. But then that's Jim Cameron for you.
