Can you think of a snappy caption for this odd picture? Of course you can. You're a h2g2 Researcher.
Way Down Upon the Monongahela River???
What the heck? The author of 'Way Down Upon the Swanee River' was from Pittsburgh? Just think about it, so was Gertrude Stein. All the best people hail from there. So, since Stephen Foster was from Pittsburgh, they put this…er, elegant…statue up in his honour.
In his defence, Foster wasn't around to see it. (Which is probably a mercy.) In Pittsburgh's defence, the statue is often the subject of pranks, such as stealing the banjo… It's been moved several times, for its own safety. You can see why. It now resides in a little parklet near Carnegie Library, next to the dinosaur that gets a scarf.
Can you come up with a caption for this musical picture?
