A scientific Transylvanian meets Ben Franklin and puts on a show in Charleston.

I couldn't help it. When Ben wrote that he knew a Transylvanian Tartar, I yelped, 'Who? What? Where? Why?' You know the kind of thing.

It's shocking no-one's written anything about this – obviously everyone's stunned into silence.

My unsubstantiated theory is that he carried his delicate electrical apparatus, wrapped in Manila paper, from the Philippines into China. There, hoping to learn more skills, he studied fireworks as well as demonstrated electricity, only to be arrested! But was he charged or let off?

He could have staged a daring escape into Tibet, there to become an enlightened monk, living on tea and yak butter... With an electrified cave...

Oh the joy of wonder - I have a mind that the picked him up and he's still enjoying a trip around space and time

Just one typo I spotted: cloathing = clothing

for writing this up - I can't imagine what our world would be like without the wonder that is electrickery.

Honey, that typo was Ben Franklin's misspelling. I refuse to correct anybody in the 18th Century's spelling. It would be rude...besides, they were so creative...
