Cluny Abbey was the preeminent seat of Roman Catholicism in France for centuries.

The ancient abbey was destroyed in the French Revolution and its demolition completed in the 1890s.

The picture reminded, probably on account of features common to the great cathedrals of the late 1st and early 2nd millennium.
