Well done and bravo!

I'm not convinced that Gollum was intending to honour his promise to give the ring to Frodo as a prize. Without re-reading, my memory is that he had treachery in mind. Besides, psychologically it would be an unthinkable wrench to give away his precious. One simply does not.

Thanks for the final mention. Would it be too much to request that it be called the hobby/habit theory?

Done.

The first edition of The Hobbit says this about Gollum when he found the ring was missing:

"I don't know how many times Gollum begged Bilbo's pardon. He kept on saying: 'We are ssorry; we didn't mean to cheat, we meant to give it our only only pressent, if it won the competition.' He even offered to catch Bilbo some nice juicy fish to eat as a consolation."

Quite different from the second edition.

Since Bilbo wouldn't accept the fish, Gollum showed him the way out instead.

So I know only the second edition. I have a memory of Gollum suspecting the awful truth and coming looking for Bilbo who hid and followed as Gollum unwittingly led him to the exit, fuming the while.

Yes, that was the version I read as a child and the one that has been the published version ever since The Lord of the Rings came out.

Do you think Recumbentman should be added as co-author instead of the mention at the end?

Thanks Eds. smiley - redwine

Recumbentman asked not to be added as co-author. He preferred the mention at the end.

That looks great. I'm glad that hole in the coverage of Tolkien is now filled.
